AARP #1203
Newsflashes |
Annual Picnic When: August 12, 2003 |
The following article was taken from the AARP Connections: Beyond 50.03: A Report to the Nation on Independent Living and Disability. This year's Beyond 50 report, the third on the series, takes an in-depth look at challenges faced by the people 50 and over with disabilities in maintaining independence and dignity as they age. The ability to live independently and with choices typically depends on support from a variety of sources: supportive services, family and community, and the social and physical environment. Based on a review of historical patterns and new survey data, Beyond 50 finds that options for independent living are growing, as is the number of people 50 and over with disabilities who can live independently, thanks in part to technology. Nevertheless, many individuals have unmet needs and the nation faces a huge challenge in removing the barriers to independence. The complete report of Beyond 50 is available online at www.aarp.org/beyond50. |
